STONE FIREPLACE SURROUND DIVISION After supplying eleven Ritz-Carlton Hotels with numerous types of elaborate stone work from 1985 through 1992, the hotel construction boom came to a sudden halt. Having developed extensive resources and relationships with numerous European factories, RKW needed to develop some format for continuous business in the absence of hotel construction. The housing industry was continuing to flourish and marble fireplace surrounds were in great demand. Therefore, in 1993 RKW initiated the production of these materials with the same factories that formerly produced its hotel projects. From the beginning RKW’s emphasis has been on providing first quality materials and workmanship. RKW does not sell second quality materials. After studying the materials and practices of the primary suppliers in this industry, RKW made several important decisions to distinguish itself from the standard materials and operations being provided. RKW’s system improvements substantially reduced handling cost, re-crating cost, damage to materials and overhead. We improved the durability of the crates containing the stone surrounds by adding more styrofoam, four steel straps and shrink wrapping the entire crate. RKW introduced the ten pack crating system. Another great innovation was to produce fireplace surround sets in seven different set sizes, to accommodate the specific installation requirements of the fireplace manufacturers and our customers. This reduces or eliminates the need to cut individual pieces prior to installation. The pricing of our five most popular stone fireplace surround types is the best in the industry for quality stone. Nine unique types of marble, granite, slate, and limestone are available in six standard set sizes.
